How Frugal Are You?

Color Theory for Web Design

Some time ago I finished up website I was really proud of.  It was colorful and inovative, or so I thought.

I posted it on a web developer forum, requesting "feedback."  ("Feedback" as defined by me, means 'to respond with absolute praise when viewing genius.’)

It didn't take long for one person to respond: "You might want to consider learning something about color theory."

Now I'm an artistic guy, with a something of a fragile ego.  After reading that, I had two choices: learn from it, or post a reply using words no one under 18 should ever hear?

I decided to learn from it. So after removing the nail from my deflated head, I Googled "Color Theory Web Design."  And there it was in black and white, very solid and trust-worthy principals as to how to use color in web design.  (I included some of the web sites below.)

Lessons learned:

  • Web development encompasses many different disciplines.  20 years of programming experience is great, but it doesn't squat if your sites look like they belong on a refrigerator.
  • Don't take your color choices for granted.
